Render to Reality | Ritchie Avenue Bedrooms & Baths Blog

Well, hello there you dark, dingy small bath… you look like you haven’t done anything since 1855. Don’t worry we can help! What’s that… you have a small bedroom to go along with you? Perfect, we will check it out! Don’t worry we see your master bedroom, and yes it does need some help in the layout. Oh gosh, no master bath…. Don’t worry one bit, we got you!

Ok… that might not be how it went but if walls could talk, we are pretty sure it would be something like that! We know you can’t quite see it (because physically there are no lights), but trust us! These bedroom and bathroom spaces are part of a whole home remodel for a 1855 farmhouse, with a Mackinac Island twist that we were excited to be part of!

In our client’s onsite design consultation, we heard:

  • “I know it’s a small bathroom but the layout is perfect”
  • “We can reuse the original cast iron tub since it’s in mint condition”
  • “I actually like the small bedroom and will figure out who will use this space, so let’s keep it”
  • “How can we get more light into this bedroom”
  • “Somehow we need a master bath that also has a closet”
  • “How will a master bedroom with ideally a king bed fit into this small home without doing an addition?”
  • “I want to keep as much intact as the bones are really good”

BEFORE PHOTOS

If you could step into our heads as we hear all of this you would see the tornado of ideas and options swirling around. We left the site excited and got to work!

What we found out is while yes, we have a small amount of square foot, it was in fact do-able! What that meant was the following needed to happen:

  • The existing small bath would not have room for a closet so we needed to fit a vanity in the space between the toilet stack and wall
  • The bedroom needed to keep window width but we needed to maximize the height
  • We needed to create a wall to divide the dining and living from the master bedroom by pushing into the porch to make space for a master bed.
  • We needed to create space for a master bathroom with a double vanity, toilet, shower and closet space

Function and form are so important in these spaces as they were tight. We walked the walk (virtually) and talked the talk to really see how the client wanted to use the space. In the end we found a perfect solution that did just that!

Seeing our designs solidifies a lot of things… like all the moving parts!

Wild colors, texture upon texture, we were able to pull together the most fun design. Each space makes you feel as if you have entered a different home on Mackinac Island, feeling cozy and charming. Large crown profiles, fun wallpapers and original and true to the farm finishes pull these spaces together oh so well!

Fun fact: The client started out with our concept designs, that included finish selections. Then they added on our virtual mood board services for the bedrooms to pull it all together!

Get ready for the bathrooms that will knock your socks off!

We are still in awe of our designs and want to say a huge THANK YOU to our clients for trusting our process! We had the BEST time and can’t wait to hear of all the memories made in Grandma and Grandpa’s farmhouse!

Kick off your boots, wash up and get ready to get cozy!
